At Georgia Brain & Spine Center

Traumatic brain Injury is a broad diagnosis that spans from concussions (also known as mild traumatic brain injury) on one end of the spectrum to severe traumatic brain injury on the other end. A concussion is the experience of having a temporary neurological change – such as loss of consciousness, confusion, distractibility, or memory problems – following a head injury without any clear structural damage to the brain. When there is structural damage to the brain such as bruising, this is called a contusion. Severe traumatic brain injury involves more significant damage to the brain and requires admission to the intensive care unit. Following a head injury, many patients go on to develop a post-concussive syndrome which can include symptoms like dizziness, headaches, blurred vision, balance problems, ringing in the ears, memory and concentration difficulty, and impaired judgement.

Traumatic Brain Injury, Contusion, and Concussion Treatments

Traumatic brain injury, contusions, and concussions require early diagnosis and management. While the majority of contusions and concussions can be treated with supportive measures only, severe traumatic brain injury often requires invasive procedures and surgery. If you suspect that you may have had an injury to your head or that you may be experiencing symptoms from a past injury, please make an appointment to be seen by one of our neurosurgeons.

It can be difficult to live with a traumatic brain injury. If you or a loved one is suffering from this condition, we may be able to help. Please contact us to make an appointment at the Georgia Brain & Spine Center.
