Intracranial infections are usually identified based on physical exam, imaging, and laboratory based findings including evaluation of blood and cerebrospinal fluid samples. The goal of treatment is to identify the bacteria causing the infection, determine where the infection came from, and eradicate the infection as well the source. Sometimes meningitis and brain abscesses can be treated with intravenous antibiotics. However, frequently surgery is necessary to ensure a good recovery. They type of surgery will be based on numerous factors including the extent of the infection and how likely it is to respond to antibiotics.
