At Georgia Brain & Spine Center
The spinal column has a normal curvature that permits you to stand upright, with good posture, and without your back muscles getting tired. However, as the spine ages, some people lose this curvature due to bone loss and arthritis and develop a stooped posture which is a type of adult spinal deformity. Deformities can also occur as a result of trauma, prior surgery, or neuromuscular disorders.
Treatment for Adult Spinal Deformity
If you have adult spinal deformity, your body may be able to compensate up until a point. But when it progresses too far, this can lead to pain, muscle fatigue, and difficulty walking. Our surgeons may be able to help you with a surgery to restore the normal alignment of your back. Sometimes this requires a procedure called an osteotomy where a part of your spinal column is re-set in the correct orientation.
