At Georgia Brain & Spine Center

After undergoing spine surgery, some patients may still experience chronic pain related to their back. This is called “failed back syndrome”. Every case is unique, but the condition could be caused by scar tissue formation, recurrent or persistent disc disease, continued narrowing of the spinal canal, mechanical instability of the vertebrae, non-fusion of the spine, nerve damage, infection, or improper alignment of the spinal column.

Treatment

With failed back syndrome, the key is finding the precise source of your pain. Our experienced neurosurgeons will conduct a throughout history and examination, including imaging studies. When we identify the pain source, we will first try non-surgical treatments like physical therapy, analgesics, and spinal injections. If these treatments don’t work or aren’t an option, our neurosurgeons will design a procedure to fix your problems with surgery. When possible, we will use Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery techniques. This might involve decompressing narrow areas around your nerve roots, stabilizing and fusing unstable bones, and sometimes using chronic pain control methods like neuromodulation or spinal cord stimulation.

If you’ve had back surgery but find that you are still in pain, we may be able to help. Contact us to schedule an appointment at Georgia Brain & Spine Center.
