If you have carpal tunnel syndrome, it means you have added pressure on your median nerve around your wrist. The nerve passes through a tunnel inside the bones of your hand with a ligament on top of the tunnel. With repetitive use of the hand, you can develop inflammation and thickening in this ligament, causing the space within the tunnel to get smaller which puts pressure on the median nerve.
Non-Surgical Treatments for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
For patients with carpal tunnel syndrome, our first treatment choice is to have you avoid the repetitive activities that could be causing it. We may brace your wrist to keep it in a neutral position. Some patients also benefit from a short course of anti-inflammatory medications or cortisone injection into the carpal tunnel.
Carpal Tunnel Surgery
If you don’t get relief from the non-surgical options, we may perform surgery to open or release the carpal tunnel by cutting the ligament to take pressure off the nerve. The minimally invasive surgery allows for a rapid recovery and, when performed by our skilled neurosurgeons, is usually very successful in improving the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.
